For a long time, I let the thoughts and feelings of others get to me. It didn’t occur to me that they are just that, the thoughts and feelings of ‘others’. All too readily we take the opinions of others and start to believe them ourselves. This changes us.
Everyone Has an Opinion
It was only last year(2017) that something changed. On January 1st 2017, I decided to change. I was listening to people complaining on TV about this and that and remember thinking to myself, why moan about things you can’t control.
There was talk about how they would have dealt with the situation and again I sat and thought, but you don’t know their situation, maybe it was the only way they felt they could. I was left confused about why lots of people focus on what others are doing and not what they are doing.
Time to Change
For the past year, I have been working on myself. Controlling how I feel and assessing things without becoming attached to them and making sure I remind myself that as far as emotions go, the only one I need to focus on is me and that everyone else is entitled to their own opinions, that doesn’t mean I have to agree with them or become them.
It’s hard to let the opinion of others go and move on, especially if the opinion is towards you.
I’ve had times in the past where I got stuck in the same vicious circle and couldn’t see a way out. It was because I didn’t like me and didn’t respect myself enough to step back and think about the situation, why did they feel the need to say something hurtful? Most of the time, it was a reflection of themselves and perhaps even a need to hear someone say, it is fine to be yourself.
When you find yourself stuck, upset and feeling alone. Just remember always to love you and that just because someone else thinks that way, doesn’t mean you have to.
