We all have days where the focus just seems to be absent and everything other than the task we should be doing is much more ‘fun’. Staying motivated is quite hard when there are so many things around us which distract us and almost always leads us to a loss of focus.
So to stay motivated, how can we do it without too much of our precious time used?
1. Set Up Purposely
End each day specifically ‘setting yourself up’. What I mean by this is to get everything out and accessible that needs to be. So if you plan on exercising, get your exercise clothes out ready or in an accessible place so you can get dressed and get going straight away.
2. Organise Everything!
And I mean everything. If you take the time to sit down and write out what you want to do and when, it will save you time and effort and give you a set of specific tasks to do, the order in which to do them and how to do them. Sometimes there are things that we can’t organise as we cannot predict what is going to happen but we can still decide when we want to do that specific thing.
My background is in web development and if we are going to start a new project, the whole thing needs to be planned out before we start work. This is to ensure that everyone knows what they are doing and when – this is especially useful when working with people outside of my usual team.
Another example is a building. It doesn’t matter when building, just a building. A builder needs to know what is to be built and when. They can’t build the roof before the walls and the walls before the foundation and so on. They have to be organised to know when and where they will be so that they can work effectively and finish the building.
3. Remove any Distractions
Distractions are everywhere. We can never avoid them as they are just a part of normal life for all of us. It takes practice to be able to ignore the phone and Facebook but it is possible to do. In the past, I have found meditation is a great way to diminish distractions caused by sounds around me but sometimes we can’t.
In life there are those distractions that really do require our attention – children, for example, they are learning still and sometimes don’t understand that we need ‘quiet time’. If this is the case for you, it’s a good idea to find pockets of time where they will be no one around so you can keep yourself motivated for the tasks at hand.
4. Limit the Number of Tasks
Try not to set too many tasks to complete in one day. We are only human and there are only 16 hours in a day – if you sleep exactly 8 hours each day that is – on average that we can do the things we have set out to do and if there are 20 tasks to do in a day you may start to feel a little overwhelmed by it. If you stick to 5 – 8 tasks in a day you would be far more productive and will be able to keep focused for much longer.
Personally, I set between 4 – 7 tasks on a given day and carry over the ones I haven’t completed to the next day. Everyone is different so experiment with how much you can get done on an average day, never a great day as those days are sometimes few and far between.
5. Don’t Quit
Whatever you do, don’t give up. If you do, you are giving yourself permission to quit when the moment gets too tough. Don’t do it! The moment only gets tough because you are about to reach a goal or milestone. Hang in there and keep focusing on your dream because if you quit now, you won’t be any closer to it.
Give it one final push to the end and see the rewards come flooding in.
